Jonathan Anderson, the creative director of Spanish accessories maker Loewe, founder of JW Anderson, and 2023 CFDA International Designer of the Year, is one of the hottest designers right now. Thanks to his collection with Uniqlo, which drops today, picking up his cold-weather wardrobe essentials (beloved by celebs like Jennifer Lawrence, Rihanna, and Emily Ratajkowski) will only set you back as little as $8.
“For this collection, we were really drawn to the ideas of British heritage and vintage-academia-inspired pieces,” Anderson, who founded his label in 2008, tells Glamour. “There’s also the element of exploring the countryside or coastal wardrobe essentials, but then updating them to be more modern and with our signature JW Anderson interpretation.” Most pieces are available in sizes from XXS to XL and are unisex, and most everything is below $75; the most expensive item is a $150 winter coat.
In other words, preppy style is back this season. (Just ask Rowing Blazers.) “I really like this idea of taking something classic or traditional, but giving it a twist in an unexpected way,” the Northern Irish designer continues, “blending it with more modern elements and technical materials.” Classic duffle coats have been cropped and given sharp structure; Fair Isle sweaters have been remixed with squirrel motifs; pleated skirts have been smoothed out. You’ll also find a pair of not too tight skinny jeans that could have come straight from Kate Middleton’s closet. (In fact, the whole collection feels like an updated take on Kate’s collegiate wardrobe from season six of The Crown.)
Uniqlo is no stranger to high-fashion collaborations; the Japanese retailer has partnered with the likes of Marni, Jil Sander, and Christophe Lemaire, offering true designer pieces at more accessible prices than usual. The brand has been working with Anderson since 2017, and while it isn’t offering Anderson’s more out-there ideas—there are no realistic flower tops or Polly Pocket shoes—it’s still a chance to buy into a designer on the rise.
“Working with Uniqlo is a great opportunity to dress a global audience. It’s a broader demographic—it makes you think differently,” Anderson explains. “The designs are accessible, but still with the attention to detail and ultimately the quality which sets them apart.” Shop our favorite pieces below before they start disappearing for good.
