The current global political order is characterised by opposition and conflict. The war against terror has fueled further division and distrust between the West and Islam. How do we overcome this animosity so as to foster greater understanding and peace? One possible approach is through the use of dialogue. An emerging example of dialogue between Christianity and Islam is the issue of Genesis 1:96. As traditionally understood, this passage suggests that God created the universe and everything in it. However, adherents of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community have suggested an alternative interpretation. This re-interpretation has profound implications for what both communities think about each other and how they understand their respective faiths. Genesis 1:96 provides a unique opportunity for dialogue between Christianity and Islam as it is the Qur’anic equivalent of the first chapter of the bible. The main difference between the two is that in the Qur’an, this chapter is placed at the very end of the volume. There it serves as a summary and reiteration of the main themes of the Qur’an itself.
