Angelina Jolie recently stepped out in a caped coat over a silky slip dress, in an echo of a look she wore on the red carpet some 25 years ago.
Historically, capes have been used to make a bold sartorial statement—whether on or off the red carpet—as demonstrated by Jackie Kennedy’s all-white Oleg Cassini ensemble for her husband’s Inaugural Ball in 1961 or André Leon Talley’s theatrical Gucci by Tom Ford look for the 2007 Met Gala. Fast-forward to today, and Angelina Jolie has been spotted incorporating the cape into her elegant contemporary wardrobe.
Out in New York City with her family, the 47-year-old Hollywood star wore a chic ensemble comprising a cream silk slip dress with a black bouclé caped coat thrown over the top. The look was topped off with a black leather Saint Laurent clutch bag and a gold pair of pointed toe heels.
The look echoed Jolie’s chosen outfit for the 1997 CableACE Awards, where the actor wore a black velvet caped coat, not dissimilar to the one she wore this week, over a lilac floor-length slip dress.
