If there’s anyone that can make menswear interesting, it’s Lil Nas X.
Unlike other male celebrities walking the MTV VMAs 2022 red carpet, the singer didn’t come in a standard suit and tie (all shade to them!). Instead, Lil Nas shut down the black carpet in an all-black feathered ensemble. The “Industry Baby” singer wore a tiered overskirt and matching headpiece with thousands of feathers, courtesy of British American designer Harris Reed.
“It is heavy,” he joked with preshow host Nessa Diab of the look. Supermodel Iman, who wore a gold version of Reed’s creation to the “In America”–themed Met Gala in 2021, told People the getup wasn’t heavy at all. In the words of Oprah Winfrey…so what is the truth?
Lil Nas X isn’t one for a safe fashion moment—wearing head-turning outfits like Versace armor and Barbie pink cowboy hats in the past. It’s not surprising that he put his own spin on Iman’s iconic gold look, trading in a jumpsuit for trousers and no shirt.
Lil Nas X is nominated for artist of the year alongside industry best friends Lizzo and Jack Harlow, as well as fan favorites like Bad Bunny, Drake, and Harry Styles. Harlow and Lil Nas won best collaboration earlier in the night for their chart-topping single “First Class.” Maybe it was the magic of the feathers?
