Can you wear shorts to the office? According to a woman I came across on TikTok last week, the answer is “no, never, absolutely not.” But according to Meghan Markle….
The Duchess of Sussex made the case for professional shorts when she stepped out for lunch with Gloria Steinem at the Crosby Street Hotel in SoHo during her trip to New York City on Monday, July 18. She styled her cuffed navy Dior shorts with a casual white button-up, making sure to match her cognac-colored Ralph Lauren belt to her suede Manolo Blahnik pumps and beaded Cult Gaia clutch.
See the look below:
Let’s break it down: The length of the shorts—which hit just above the knee—as well as their perfectly tailored but slightly boxy fit, protect against any accidental wardrobe malfunctions. And everyone knows that a white button-front shirt makes any outfit seem instantly office appropriate. The heels definitely elevate the look, while the trendy bag prevents the whole thing from feeling too stuffy.
Earlier in the day, the duchess arrived at the U.N.’s NYC headquarters hand-in-hand with Prince Harry wearing another office staple, the pencil skirt, which she paired with a simple black top and black pumps. For a pop of color, she carried her oxblood Mulberry bag, and she kept her glam simple, wearing her hair in the same low ponytail. We can always count on Ms. Markle for some office attire inspiration.
Of course, Meghan (and myself) bears no responsibility if H.R. comes for your exposed knees, but the issue of policing women’s bodies in public is a whole other can of worms. Plus, it certainly helps to have Gloria Steinem on speed dial, as Meghan clearly does. We love to see it.
