United States: Consumer confidence falls more than expected in September

Consumer confidence in the United States deteriorated much more than expected in September, according to the Conference Board’s monthly survey published on Tuesday.
The confidence index calculated by the employers’ organization came in at 103.0, compared with a revised 108.7 in August. Economists polled by Reuters were expecting an index of 105.5.
Consumers’ assessment of the current situation stood at 147.1 in September, compared with 146.70 (revised) last month, while expectations, based on short-term prospects for income, business and labor market conditions, fell to 73.7 from 83.3 (revised).

An expectation level below 80.0 signals a likely recession within a year.
