Dripping in head-to-toe Dior, Elizabeth Debicki subtly paid homage to Princess Diana at the 2023 Golden Globes. The French Australian actor, who plays the late Princess of Wales on the final two seasons of Netflix’s The Crown, arrived at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles draped in a minimalist, salmon-colored column gown. The strapless dress’s only embellishment was a thin sash tied in a bow. If anyone knew how to do the most with the simplest fashion, it was Lady Di.
Nominated for best supporting actress in a musical-comedy or drama television series, Debicki paired the satin frock with a delicate diamond collar courtesy of Dior Fine Jewlery. Her makeup, furnished by Dior Beauty, was also kept simple with a subtle smoky eye and a nude lip. Her brushed-out blonde waves came courtesy of hairstylist Mara Roszak using PHYTO blow dry balm, blow dry spray, and touch-up cream.
In conversation with Glamour, Debicki recalled working extensively with coaches to perfect Diana’s accent for the role. She even learned how to copy her signature. And clearly, her commitment paid off. Even biographer Andrew Morton, author of Diana: Her True Story, called Debicki’s portrayal of the late Princess of Wales “unnervingly accurate and authentic.”
Previously, for the fifth season’s red-carpet premiere, the 32-year-old sported a Dior haute couture spring-summer 2022 gown that took some 300 hours to make. Loaded with symbolism, the jet-black strapless bustier design mirrored that of a baby blue Catherine Walker dress Diana wore to Cannes in 1987. The inky color of the gown also evoked Diana’s divorce-era style, and in particular the Christina Stambolian “revenge dress” she famously wore in 1994 after Prince Charles publicly confessed to having an affair with his now wife Camilla Parker Bowles. Debicki also wore a re-creation of the revenge dress in the series.
The French fashion house named its Lady Dior bag after Diana in 1996, and fittingly, Debicki is a Dior Joaillerie ambassador.
Filming for The Crown‘s sixth and final season began in September 2022, but new episodes aren’t expected to air until later this year. Tonight the show is in the running for best drama series.
