Last night, December 1, President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden hosted their first state dinner since moving in to the White House in 2021, with the guests of honor being French president Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron.
Among the several hundred others in attendance were singer Jon Baptiste, who was performing, musician John Legend and cookbook author Chrissy Teigen, and actor Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The dinner was red-white-and-blue-themed—a nod to both countries’ flags, and, according to Biden, “our common values: liberty and democracy, equality and fellowship.” First ladies Macron and Biden chose looks that further underscored the night’s theme.
Dr. Jill Biden chose a navy column gown by Oscar de la Renta with an off-the-shoulder neckline, long sleeves, and a botanical lace pattern that revealed nude lining underneath. Biden has a history of supporting the next generation of American designers—she wore Markarian for the inauguration and frequently wears Adam Lippes—and continued this streak by choosing Oscar de la Renta, currently helmed by Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia.
Meanwhile, Brigitte Macron wore a winter white turtleneck dress with abstract silver detailing at the waist and the neckline and silver accessories. Both presidents chose classic black tuxedos for the occasion.
