Literal red-carpet dressing is always entertaining (check out Zendaya on the ), and last night Daisy Edgar-Jones proved she also likes to have fun with fashion. At the New York premiere of Where the Crawdads Sing, the British actor gave a quiet nod to her character Kya, or more specifically, the marshlands she inhabits in North Carolina, via Gucci.
The colorful look, from the Italian brand’s wanderlust-laced Cosmogonie show set in Puglia, was one part Crawdads, two parts dance floor. Featuring sequined floral vines latticed together over a nude slip, Daisy Edgar-Jones showed that protagonist dressing doesn’t have to veer into costume territory. With just a smattering of Tiffany & Co. diamonds for company, the 24-year-old looked playful yet chic.
Edgar-Jones burst onto the scene as a classic English rose, wearing the kind of ladylike Brit-girl favorites—read: The Vampire’s Wife, Bella Freud—that her stylist Nicky Yates does so well. As her star has ascended and her film parts have diversified, the Normal People star has become more confident and playful in the spotlight. She was one of the first to wear Loewe’s cult cracked-egg heels with a deconstructed silver slip and has tapped into the bralette trend more than once. At Vogue parties, she’s all flapper-style beading and sass.
If this fresh take on florals signifies a new dawn for Edgar-Jones, bring on the rest of the press circuit. Next stop: Alexander McQueen’s haunting underwater tribe spring-summer 2010 collection? Or perhaps the designer’s poignant autumn-winter 2008 line, entitled The Girl Who Lived in the Tree? An archive hit would cement this bright young thing as one to seriously watch.
