On Wednesday, September 7, Ana de Armas made her first appearance at the Venice Film Festival, where she will be promoting the new Andrew Dominik–directed film, Blonde.
And given that De Armas portrays the iconic Marilyn Monroe in the film, it was only fitting that she choose a glamorous outfit for her first stop on the press tour. Arriving on one of those signature wooden speedboats, the actor wore a blue shorts suit by Louis Vuitton, complete with golden nautical buttons, and black strappy Gianvito Rossi heels. The micro shorts are a subtle nod to Marilyn—albeit in a much more modern way.
Monroe, who dominated Hollywood screens during the 1950s, had a penchant for wearing pinup-style high-waist short shorts and swimsuit bottoms. Archival images of the starlet showcase her wearing the piece in a variety of promotional images, either with T-shirts, bikini tops, or vampy corsets. Armas’s pleated take on the silhouette was decidedly longer and boxier but would still look trendy in the ’50s.
Styled with a sleek navy blazer and sexy heels, though, de Armas’s nod to Marilyn felt totally fresh and current. It was a clever take on one of the style icon’s most signature wardrobe staples, and way less on the nose than, say, showing up in a halter-neck white dress or a nude, sparkly dress (like Kim Kardashian famously did at the Met). This homage—one of many more this week, we’re sure—has started Ana de Armas’s time in Venice off on a high note.
