Dakota Johnson took the Coachella aesthetic—think festival style favorites like fringe, barely there tops, and other hippie-core essentials—and added a business-class spin worthy of the Succession crew.
It sounds chaotic in theory, but Johnson shows us how it’s done: Her cream crochet bra—worn as a top, of course—is flirty and fun, but it gets an upscale edge when paired with a skirt suit, a simple gold necklace, and chic sunglasses. P.R. company The Honeyman Agency identified the ensemble on Instagram as being from the brand Magda Butrym, though Johnson’s stylist Kate Young hasn’t confirmed yet.
In the meantime, please enjoy the look for yourself:
A bra as a top, a bandeau top, or a bra under a sheer top is quickly becoming a regular style staple. Zazie Beets made her bra top super formal for a red carpet, while Ariana Grande wore a black bra top for her brother’s wedding. It’s basically the only kind of top Julia Fox owns. Zendaya wore a bandeau to the CFDA Awards, and Meghan Thee Stallion put her black bra on full display under a sheer shirt. Like Dakota Johnson, Florence Pugh chose to go the matchy-matchy route when she recently wore a two-piece lace black bra top and lace black skirt.
Also, this is the second cream-colored ensemble Johnson has worn on the streets of NYC in a week. She recently stepped out in a chic blazer that was backless…with chains! Was it a Fifty Shades callback? I hope so.
Those outfits also remind me of the below, which Johnson wore to the annual Governors Awards in 2019. Always ahead of her time, this one.
DakotaHeads (I am one!) will soon see the star in Netflix’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion. The first trailer was recently released, and it looks like Johnson is going full Fleabag with cheeky asides to the camera and self-aware moments. According to Netflix, the movie will remain true to the novel but will present a “modern, witty approach” to Austen’s final book: “Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities. When Frederick Wentworth—the dashing one she once sent away—crashes back into her life, Anne must choose between putting the past behind her or listening to her heart when it comes to second chances.” And bras as tops, please!
