On August 24, luxury resale site The RealReal released its 2022 report on trends and consumer behaviors in the second-hand market and there’s lots to unpack.
According to The RealReal’s findings, 5.3 million users joined the site in 2022 and the number of purchased items increased by 44 percent. But what exactly are people buying? Well, in addition to pinpointing the most demanded brands, The RealReal reports that there are three accessories in particular that are especially popular. Gucci shoes, Chanel shoes, and Louis Vuitton bags are their top resold accessories.
Of course, we already know the power of celebrity when it comes to fashion trends and we’ve definitely spotted these items on some of the most influential. Gucci shoes, especially loafers, seem to be a popular choice among celebrities. OOTD icon Hailey Bieber is often spotted wearing a pair of loafers, including the Gucci slip-ons. Other celebrities sporting the brand’s footwear include EXO’s Kai, who is also a brand ambassador, and Billie Eilish.
Chanel similarly brings in big names, with BLACKPINK’s Jennie being an ambassador for the brand. She is often seen sporting shoes, bags, and apparel from the brand across a variety of events.
While Louis Vuitton’s logo-printed handbags are classic, even the trendiest of celebrities are carrying them. A favorite among Gen Z, Emma Chamberlain was recently spotted carrying a clutch from the French brand. The RealReal also reported that one of the it-bags of the year is Louis Vuitton’s Onthego, which you may have spotted on the set of HBO’s .
Another favorite of Gen Z, TikTok remains another force in the fashion industry, and it seems the app’s users are also privy to these coveted accessories. At the time of writing, “Gucci shoes” has accumulated over 144 million views with people sharing their favorite pair from the brand on the tag. Similarly, “Chanel shoes” has acquired over 7 million views and “Louis Vuitton bag” has over 204 million views, with many videos posted to the tag being unboxings.
In fact, according to the report, Gen Z is buying more second-hand items in 2022 and reselling their items the fastest. They’re buying and selling more women’s clothing this year in addition to buying more pendants and selling more women’s shoes.
It seems the resale market remains a popular choice among young people as they strive to shop ethically and protect the environment, and who can resist a chic accessory in the process? It’s like a reward, as they say.
