Katie Holmes Says Goodbye to the Orthopedic Cork Wedge—But What Comes Next?

Katie Holmes has spent the past couple of weeks tramping through Manhattan in an accretion of unusual shoes. Perhaps emboldened by the near-invisible kitten heels she wore to Cannes or the grommeted ballet pumps she wore to the Theatre World Awards, the actor has since become an unexpected advocate for orthopedic-looking cork wedges and leprechaun loafers. But Holmes’s summer of strange experimentation now seems as though it might have come to an untimely end.

That is because she was photographed in jogging bottoms and high-top sneakers, with an inconspicuous Balenciaga-branded toe. Hair in a hasty updo, the look was a little more “I’m going to play squash or perhaps get a coffee with a gal pal” than “I’m going to spin some string into gold and unleash misfortune onto an unsuspecting Bavarian village.” (Please refer to last week’s missive on Katie Holmes’s Rumpelstiltskin steppers for more information on how that last scenario might have played out.)

Throughout all of this shapeshifting, Holmes’s APC handbag remains a constant, slung over her shoulder like a bit of cloth on a trusty bindle stick. Of course, Katie Holmes might have been wearing those shoes because she was headed to the gym, but she might also be wearing them to seed a skater-girl rebrand. There’s an insouciance that collects around her wardrobe (all boyish shirts and piles of gold chains), and these high-tops are an expression of that skater-coded nonchalance.
