One of the biggest nepo-baby perks is clearly the wardrobe.
On June 15, Gwyneth Paltrow hosted another one of her famous Instagram Stories Q+As while passing the time in Italy with her husband, Brad Falchuck. While most of the questions revolved around the picturesque vacation spot and relationship advice, one user asked if the Goop mogul’s 19-year-old daughter, Apple Martin, ever wears anything from her fashion archives.
The answer, of course, is yes. Paltrow responded to the inquiry with a photo of her daughter, whom she shares with ex-husband Chris Martin, wearing the semisheer black Alexander McQueen gown that her mom originally wore to the Oscars in 2002. Though the dress didn’t win Paltrow many fashion points at the time, it couldn’t be more on trend now with its nude-lined mesh bodice and corset-inspired cinching.
Though Paltrow later said she “should have worn a bra” and toned down her makeup for the red-carpet moment, I’d argue she nailed the “punk at the Oscars” look she was going for at 29 years old.
“Everybody really hated [it], but I think it’s kind of dope,” Gwyneth Paltrow reflected in a 2021 Vogue video. “I had a weird hangover about it for a while because people were really critical. I think at the time, it was too goth…too hard. I think it sort of shocked people. But I like it.”
Twenty-one years later, Apple Martin gave the look the second life it deserves.
In the photo, the 19-year-old looks almost exactly like her mom, minus the heavy black eyeliner and braided crown. I am especially fond of Apple’s pearl accessories, though the black cord on Paltrow’s Y2K statement necklace definitely brings back fond memories. Maybe Apple will borrow that next.
